Today, the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery is still manned by Cooktown School of Art Society volunteers, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes local art and local artists, above all else. One major exhibition is held annually and is simply called the Annual Art Exhibition. During the peak tourist season, the "dry season"from around June to October, several smaller exhibitions often take place, with displays lasting for 14 days and entries being open to non-members as well as members. From time to time, visiting artists offer the opportunity for locals to improve existing skills or learn new ones.
Some exhibitions have attracted entries from all over Queensland, including Noosa, Bowen, and Cairns, to name a few. But most of our entries come from within the Cook Shire, and we are proud to represent such a talented and eclectic group of artists.
Into the future, we have plans to hold more mini exhibitions every year, to offer further opportunities for emerging artists to learn and grow, to expand and improve our gallery and keep it as a place our local artists are proud to display their works in.
Next time you are in Cooktown, drop in and say hello, sit for a while on our shady veranda, and browse our artworks on display. You'll find plenty of great works just begging to be taken home and hung on your walls!
